Dear Sir

My dear son, Pte. [Private] F.S. Routley E. Surrey Reg. [East Surrey Regiment], recently through your hospital, is now in Manchester and I am thankful to say, doing well.
We saw him during Christmas and he speaks so highly of your goodness & kindness to him, that I cannot refrain from expressing his mother's & my own deep gratitude for all your skill and care.
It means so much to us who have been badly hurt by the war—one dear boy killed at Gueudecourt in October—to have the prospect of this boy's ultimate recovery from his wound: & we feel but for your merciful attention both life & limb would not have been saved. He speaks of yourself with the greatest enthusiasm & regards the nurses as ministering angels, a proposition we all very thankfully & heartily endorse.
I remain dear Sir,
Yours very truly,
Eli Routley
