YOUNG WORKERS - WORKERS' INFORMATION

Hello, and welcome to another MOL Radio health and safety segment.

You're young … 24 or younger. You've just started a new job. You're eager ... you want to make a good impression. You want to prove that you are the right person for the job.

What you don't know is that statistically, you are more likely to be injured or worse in the first six months on the job than your more experienced co-workers.

But, there are ways to make sure that you don't become a statistic.

The Ministry of Labour has prepared comprehensive information on how to protect your health and safety at work, and on your other workplace rights such as employment standards.

We'll give you the web address at the end of this podcast.

For now, here are some basic things that you should remember when you are looking for a job, and when you finally land one and begin to work

When you go for your job interview, ask lots of safety questions such as:
• Will I get job safety training before I do the work?
• Will I be working with chemicals? If so, will I get training first?
• Must I wear safety equipment such as safety glasses? Do you supply this or do I? Will I be trained to use or wear the safety gear correctly?

Good employers appreciate questions like this … it shows them that you are safety conscious, and will not do something harmful that would hurt you or one of your fellow employees.

When you get the job and start work … ask questions.

There's no such thing as a ‘dumb" question when it come to workplace health and safety. If you are assigned a task, make sure that you know how to do it properly and safely.

Remember … your employer must provide you with information, instruction and supervision to protect your health and safety. Your employer must also tell you about any hazards in the work you are asked to do. And, you must be provided with any required equipment, materials and protective devices in good condition.

These are just the basic things you need to know when you are starting a new job.
